![]() It’s possible that I was just lucky, and the game “thought” the way I do, but I very much enjoyed being able to win without being perfect. What I appreciated most about this offering from EXOR Studios was its work on the third question I asked in the introduction. This sparing use of the framing means that it can actually seem to take itself seriously AND be a touch campy without disaster ensuing. There’s just enough voice acting and story for the necessary flavor, with no overworking of the material. When the gameplay is solid enough to be all of the substance, everything else can be limited as long as it isn’t forced to carry more weight than it’s meant for. It’s not a high-budget game, but it doesn’t have to be. X-Morph manages to deliver on all of those fronts. It allows a team to answer some important questions regarding their abilities: Can you get a good amount of mileage out of limited assets? Are you good at testing how the player reacts to different combinations of threats? Can you provide challenge without requiring exactly one solution? To me, tower defense is a great test of an indie development studio.
